February 22, 2010 - Eitreans rally against UN sanctions in several cities around the world today, including Washington, DC, San Francisco, and Geneva.
According to press reports, some 5,000 Eritreans from around Europe rallied on Monday in front of the United Nations European headquarters in Geneva to protest against UN Security Council sanctions on Eritrea, police said. The demonstrators waved Eritrean flags and carried banners such as "No to sanctions based on lies," and "Eritrea will never go on its knees".
In San Francisco, Hundreds of protesters slowed traffic near city hall in San Francisco Monday morning. These are part of a coordinated worldwide day of demonstrations. The U.N. accuses Eritrea of supporting Islamist rebels in neighboring Somalia.
In the meantime, the US Government issued statement from Asmara, Eritrea, asking the Eritrean government to stop destabilizing the region by supporting terrorists.
"The United States calls on President Isaias to immediately end Eritrea's destabilizing activities in the Horn of Africa," the U.S. Embassy said in its statement. "Eritrea's actions in Somalia and Djibouti threaten international peace and security and contribute to a dire humanitarian crisis."
