
July 25, 2010 -- Addis Ababa University (AAU) awarded honorary doctorate degree on Saturday to former South African President Thabo Mbeki and founder of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, Dr. Catherin Hamlin, for outstanding leadership at graduation ceremony of class of 2010 graduates held at the Millennium Hall, according to ENA news report.
AAU President Prof. Andiras Eshete said beyond his own country Thabo Mbeki has worked tirelessly to bring peace to many troubled parts of our continent. He mentioned Mbeki ’s mission in Zimbabwe, Cote d’Ivorie, Burundi the Democratic Republic of Congo , the Comoros and presently the Sudan to advance peace sand democracy which are an integral part of his noble vision for Africa’s regeneration.
President Mbeki on his part said “ I felt home coming. Ethiopia is a symbol for independent sovereign state.” Mbeki urged the graduates to work strenuously for African renaissance.
AAU also awarded honorary doctorate degree to the founder of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, Dr. Catherin Hamlin. AAU president Prof. Andrias Eshete said makes tireless works and to devote a life time ministering to young women suffering from the incapacitating and degrading consequences of obstructed labor.
He said she has rescued over 20,000 women from this insufferable fate.
After receiving her honorary degree Dr. Catherin said Ethiopia is a beautiful country and suitable to live.
