July 24, 2010 -- An Ethiopian man named Demisew Zerihun who attacked a lady named Kamilat Mehadi with sulphuric acid three years ago, received a final life sentence on Monday. He had claimed that he was in love with the young lady, according to news from Ethiopian Reporter. Demisew received a death sentence by the Higher Instance Court, while a 20-year jail term was given to his alleged accomplice. The defendants later appealed to the Federal Supreme Court challenging the decision, and received a relatively lenient sentence. The Federal Supreme Court reversed the ruling of the lower instance court, reduced Demisew’s sentence to 20 years and freed the alleged accomplice on the ground that the injury was done only to the external body of the victim. The prosecution then appealed to the Supreme Court Cassation Bench which again reversed the decision of the other court and gave Demisew an irreversible life jail term. Since the incident, Kamilat is being hospitalized in France for the damage was beyond the medical competence of the country.
