Kenenisa Bekele, Tirunesh Dibaba Finish Second in London Marathon

Kenenisa-Tirunesh-Finish-secondApril 24, 2017 - Kenya's Mary Keitany broke world record to win the London Marathon on Sunday, while her compatriot Daniel Wanjiru also seized glory over the 26.2-mile distance, according to reports.

Keitany finished in two hours, 17 minutes and one second, dominating the rest of the field. Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba and Aselefech Mergia came in second and third, respectively.

Meanwhile, Wanjiru held off a late rally from the legendary Ethiopian runner, Kenenisa Bekele, posting a mark of 2:05:49. Kenya's Bedan Karoki took third.

Ethiopia Finalizing Plans to Host CAF General Assembly

Ethiopia-finalizing-plans-to-host-CAFMarch 8, 2017 - Ethiopia is finalizing preparations to host the 39th ordinary general assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), according to ENA.

The event is "historic and unique" for Ethiopia that is going to host the CAF General Assembly after 51 years, Juneidin Basha President of the Federation told ENA.

Holding the meeting in Ethiopia, the founding member of CAF, is appropriate, as it coincides with the 60th founding anniversary of CAF, he said.

Five-hundred participants including CAF member countries and well known football players are expected at the event.

90,000 Addis Ababa Residents Participate in Race for GERD

Addis-residents-race-for-GERDMarch 6, 2017 - More than 90,000 residents of Addis Ababa display their support to the GERD project by taking part in the Grand Renaissance Dam running race held Sunday in the capital, according to ENA.

The 6km running was organized in connection to the 6th anniversary of the GERD and International Women's Day.

According to the organizers, the number of people participated in the race exceeded the plan by 30,000.

In addition from Addis Ababa the 6km running race has conducted in a number of towns across the country.

His wife, Iftu Mulisa, and two children, 5-year-old daugher, Soko, and 3-year-old son, Sora, arrived at the Miami International Airport after being separated from them for six months, according to VOA.

“It's been tough living alone,” he said speaking to VOA’s Afaan Oromoo Service over the phone in his native Afaan Oromoo. “Back home, I had a lot of support. It hasn’t been easy, but that's part of the struggle. You don't give up,”

The 27-year-old took more than two minutes from his PB to win in 2:10:31, improving the race record by 56 seconds. Compatriot Gulume Tollesa made it an Ethiopian double, winning the women’s race in 2:33:39.

On a day of perfect conditions for distance running, the men’s race came alive in the final 10 kilometres. It started with a conservative opening 10km of 31:58 before the pace picked up with 15km being reached in 47:03.

The three-time world indoor champion overtook the pacemaker just before the half-way mark, which was reached in 2:42.65, and continued to extend her lead over her younger sister Anna and Morocco's Siham Hilali.

Ethiopians-dominate-Dubai-marathon-2017January 20, 2017 - Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia won the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon with a timing of 2:04:11sec in the men’s race while Worknesh Degefa Debele, also from Ethiopia finished first in the women’s race with a timing of 2:22:36sec.

Tola recorded a Dubai Marathon course record in the process, beating Ayele Abshero of Ethiopia’s timing of 2:04:23, which was set in the 2012 Dubai Marathon edition.

Senior government officials, athletes, the public and other guests were present at the burial ceremony of Miruts who was dubbed "Yifter the Shifter"for his unique distance running quality. 

Mirutse won his first bronze in 10,000 meters at the Munich Olympics in 1972.

At the 1980 Moscow Olympics, he claimed his gold medals in both 10,000 and 5,000 meters.

He also won gold and bronze in 10,000 meters and 5,000 meters, respectively,

Miruts-Yifter-DiesDecember 23, 2016 - The IAAF is saddened by the news that Miruts Yifter, a double Olympic champion for Ethiopia at the 1980 Olympic Games, died yesterday (22) in Toronto, Canada, after being hospitalised for respiratory ailments. Yifter, considered by many as one of the greatest middle distance runners of all-time, was 72.

Yifter's crowning achievement was his 5,000 and 10,000m double triumph at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow at age 40, where he earned the nickname "Yifter the Shifter" for the rapid injections of speed that helped propel him to victory. In both contests, Yifter surged and slowed to confuse his key opponents. The tactic worked.

Ethiopia to Lobby Relocation of CAF Headquarters to Addis Ababa

CAFNovember 27, 2016 - Ethiopia is planning to lobby for relocation of Confederation of African Football (CAF) headquarters from Cairo, Egypt, to its capital Addis Ababa.

The upcoming CAF Congress in Addis, March next year, will present an opportunity to pitch for the “popular” idea at the highest level.

According to race results available on the organizers’ website, Dadi Bayene came in first Saturday at the Anthem Richmond Marathon with a time of 2 hours 19 minutes and 36 seconds.

Bayene finished just three seconds in front of Peter Limo of Kenya.

Bizuwork Getahun of Ethiopia came in first among the women with a time of 2 hours 37 minutes and 51 seconds.

Girma Gebre of Ethiopia won the half marathon for the men and Joan Aiyabei of Kenya captured the half marathon title for the women.

LelisaApril 17, 2013 - Ethiopia's Lelisa Desisa won the 117th Boston Marathon on Monday, pulling ahead late in the race and finishing in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 22 seconds. He beat Kenyan Micah Kongo by five seconds and Ethiopian Gebregziabher Gebremariam by eight seconds.

Lelisa Desisa, 23, promised he would come back again next year after training back in Ethiopia for the hilly Boston course. He sat for a postrace interview with WBZ-TV and said the course took a toll on his body.
