Ethiopian Athletes Win 800m Race over Kenyans

Ethiopian-Athlets-win-over-KenyansJuly 16, 2017 - Ethiopian athletes, Nberet Melesa and Bodena Toles won the World Under-18 Championships 800m distance run held in Kenya, coming in first and second, respectively.  "We had planned to stay ahead of the pack but it seems the Ethiopians were stronger than us," said Kibiwott, a Kenyan athlete who won the bronze medal .

Kenya failed to secure any victory on the penultimate day of the championships on Saturday, winning one silver and three bronze medals. Dominic Samson started the day with the historic bronze medal in the boys' 10,000m race walk as Mpoke Moitalel went for boys' 400m hurdles silver.

"The race was fantastic and I was confident I would win with one lap to go. However it was a tactical race because of the rains and I think that is why I failed to lower my personal best," said the Ethiopian athlete.

Ethiopia Up in Latest FIFA Ranking

Ethiopia-ranks-103July 3, 2017 - Ethiopia is ranked 103rd in world football, after moving nine places up in the latest FIFA ranking released today.
AFCON 2017 qualifiers Uganda have dropped two places to 75th. The Cranes exited the Gabon hosted showpiece prematurely after losing two but one of their group matches.

Rwanda hit the reverse gear after making tremendous gains in the last ranking – dropping 7 steps to seal the top 100.

Kenya, who have not been active since last year, like most East African countries, stagnates at 87th.

Russian Side Anzhi Makhachkala sign Ethiopian Midfielder

Gatoch-PanomJune 21, 2017 - Ethiopia national team midfielder Gatoch Panom has moved to Russian side Anzhi Makhackala on a three-year contract, having successfully exhausted his former deal with EPL side Ethiopia Coffee.

22-year-old flew to Moscow on Wednesday last week for trials with the Anzhi and now has passed his medicals without a problem.

A statement from his agent David Beshah said that they have held discussions with the side and that the deal has been sealed, five days after his trial stint with Anzhi.

“We are very delighted with the move. He is talented lad and i knew he would seal a move to Anzhi,”said Beshah.

Keitany finished in two hours, 17 minutes and one second, dominating the rest of the field. Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba and Aselefech Mergia came in second and third, respectively.

The event is "historic and unique" for Ethiopia that is going to host the CAF General Assembly after 51 years, Juneidin Basha President of the Federation told ENA.

Holding the meeting in Ethiopia, the founding member of CAF, is appropriate, as it coincides with the 60th founding anniversary of CAF, he said.

Five-hundred participants including CAF member countries and well known football players are expected at the event.

Ethiopians-dominate-Dubai-marathon-2017January 20, 2017 - Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia won the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon with a timing of 2:04:11sec in the men’s race while Worknesh Degefa Debele, also from Ethiopia finished first in the women’s race with a timing of 2:22:36sec.

Tola recorded a Dubai Marathon course record in the process, beating Ayele Abshero of Ethiopia’s timing of 2:04:23, which was set in the 2012 Dubai Marathon edition.

Senior government officials, athletes, the public and other guests were present at the burial ceremony of Miruts who was dubbed "Yifter the Shifter"for his unique distance running quality. 

Mirutse won his first bronze in 10,000 meters at the Munich Olympics in 1972.

At the 1980 Moscow Olympics, he claimed his gold medals in both 10,000 and 5,000 meters.

Miruts-Yifter-DiesDecember 23, 2016 - The IAAF is saddened by the news that Miruts Yifter, a double Olympic champion for Ethiopia at the 1980 Olympic Games, died yesterday (22) in Toronto, Canada, after being hospitalised for respiratory ailments. Yifter, considered by many as one of the greatest middle distance runners of all-time, was 72.

Yifter's crowning achievement was his 5,000 and 10,000m double triumph at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow at age 40, where he earned the nickname "Yifter the Shifter" for the rapid injections of speed that helped propel him to victory. In both contests, Yifter surged and slowed to confuse his key opponents. The tactic worked.

Ethiopia to Lobby Relocation of CAF Headquarters to Addis Ababa

CAFNovember 27, 2016 - Ethiopia is planning to lobby for relocation of Confederation of African Football (CAF) headquarters from Cairo, Egypt, to its capital Addis Ababa.

The upcoming CAF Congress in Addis, March next year, will present an opportunity to pitch for the “popular” idea at the highest level.

“Ethiopia is seeking support from many CAF members who feel Cairo is far from them, and it’s difficult to get direct flights to the North African country,” a source close to Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) told
