Nigeria, Egypt and Ethiopia the biggest contributors
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, April 17, 2009 (Ezega.com) – The table below shows the population of African-born people living in the USA during 2005-2007. The list does not include their descendants who were born in the USA. This is based on US Census Bureau, American Community Survey (ACS) estimate for the period 2005-2007.
According to this census, the African-born population living in the USA during 2005-2007 was estimated at 1,359,788. The top three contributors for this population were Nigeria (183,463), Egypt (137,279) and Ethiopia (122,001).
Of all African immigrants residing in the US in 2007, 54.4 percent were men and 45.6 percent were women. And according to ILW.com, in 2007, 42.5 percent of the 1.1 million African-born adults age 25 and older had a bachelor's degree or higher compared to 27.0 percent among the 31.6 million foreign-born adults. About one-quarter (25.2 percent) of African-born adults age 25 and older had some college education (less than a bachelor's degree) or an associate's degree compared to 17.1 percent of all foreign-born adults. This shows significant brain drain from Africa into the USA.
