Higher Education and Training in Africa – Ranking for 2008/2009

Ethiopia ranks in the bottom quartile of those surveyed in Africa

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, July 1, 2009 (Ezega.com) – Africa’s standing in Higher Education remains weak. Measured by international standard, the quality of its higher institutions as well as student enrollment rates is low. The Table below shows how 31 African countries fared in the quality of Higher Education and Training in a survey conducted by the World Economic Forum. 134 countries were surveyed globally, including 31 African countries. This metric takes into account a country’s ability to provide quality higher education and training to its citizens to compete in the world economy effectively. In this latest ranking for Higher Education and Training (2008-2009), Ethiopia ranks in the bottom quartile among African countries surveyed, 26/31, and 126/134 globally. This is yet another metric that shows the country has way to go to catch up with its peers in Africa and other countries of the world.

The top three countries in Africa are Tunisia, South Africa, and Mauritius, countries that are among the most competitive countries in Africa by most metrics. Tunisia is the only African country that ranked in the top one third of all (134) countries surveyed. Globally, Finland, Denmark and Sweden ranked number 1, 2 and 3, respectively.
