Former PM Hailemariam Desalgn Meets Mengistu Hailemariam in Zimbabwe
August 1, 2018 - Ethiopian former Prime Minsiter Hailemariam Desalgne met Ethiopian dictator Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam in Harare, Zimbabwe, on Wednesday.
The former leader of Ethiopia was never seen on media, except for giving behind the scenes interview several years ago. The picture released shows a considerably older and shorter man standing next to Hailemariam Desalegn.
The surprise meeting between Hailemariam Desalegne and the Mengistu Hailemariam has suprised many Ethiopians.
There has been calls from some Ethiopians for his return to Ethiopia to live free of any penalty.
Mengistu was head of the military junta that overthrew the last Ethiopian emperor, Haileselassie, in 1974. He ruled the country with an iron fist for 17 years during which he launched "Red Terror" in which tens of thousands of Ethiopians were allegedly killed. Some estimates put the number of killed in hundreds of thousands.
Mengistu was tried in absentia in Ethiopia in 2007 and was sentenced to life in prison for genocide.
