April 30, 2019 (Ezega.com) -- The Ethiopian government disclosed today that a state funeral arrangement is being prepared for the late President Negasso Gidada.
Dr. Negasso Gidada passed away on Saturday this week at the age of 75 years.
He was President of Ethiopia for six years (1995-2001) until his fall-out with the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, following the split within the Tigrayan People's Lberation Front (TPLF) and then the EPRDF immdiately after the war with Eritrea.
He was chairman of Oromo People’s Democratic Organization (OPDO), now renamed Oromo Democratic Party, one of four member parties of the ruling coalition, Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).
According to the press release, a National Committee has been set up to oversee the funeral arrangements, composed of members from both offices of the President and the Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs and Defense ministries, Federal Police Commission and families of the late former President.
The Committee will be led by Dr Eyob Tekelegn, State Minister of Finance, who brief the media today.
The body of the late president is still aborad and the exact arrival date of his body is unknown, according to the brief.
He received his Ph.D. in history from Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany.
