May 2, 2019 (Ezega.com) -- The United ingdom (UK) is donating 15.5 million Euros to help with Ethiopian elections coming next year.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, Foreign Secretary of the UK, Jeremy Hunt said the UK will provide assistance to Ethiopia to run free, fair and transparent elections next year.
“If successful and peaceful, the elections in May 2020 will be a major step towards building a democratic culture in Ethiopia and will lay a platform for a continuation and deepening of the inclusive reform Ethiopia has been making,” said Secretary Hunt.
Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt is attending the 2019 World Press Freedom Day celebration currently being held at the African Union in Addis Ababa.
The money is specifically meant to help the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) to run election operations.
The foreign secretary also commended the current government of Abiy Ahmed for allowing greater media freedom. “Ethiopia has climbed the World Press Freedom Index faster than any other country, rising 40 places and showing just how much can be achieved when the political will exists,” he added.
Hunt also announced a media fellowship program that will provide 60 exceptional African journalists to gain experience from Britain’s leading media organizations.
