May 13, 2019 (Ezega.com) -- Police arrested unspecified number of people in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa for alleged involvement of criminal acts including robbery.
The arrest came after dozens of individuals criticized Addis Ababa police over its reluctance to take measures as armed gang members continued robbing businesses mainly in metropolis’ biggest open market known as Merkato.
Deputy Commissioner of the Addis Ababa Police Zelalem Mengiste in a briefing said 260 vehicles which have been used for carrying out the crimes were also sized during a massive operation the police undertook on Saturday and Sunday.
According to the deputy commissioner, the campaigns were carried out in Lideta, Nifas Silk Lafto and Bole sub cities after thorough study and all the 260 vehicles were not legally registered.
“The suspects were involving in snatching, robbing and smuggling of fire arms and drugs,” the deputy commissioner disclosed.
The suspects include brokers who were engaged in supplying drugs to foreign guests in big hotels of the capital in collaboration with employees of the hotels.
“The suspects were engaged in organized crimes with well-established network in rented buildings,” Zelalem added.
The deputy commissioner said 2500 Shisha smoking materials along with their accessories were also captured.
Half a kilo of drug was also seized, said the deputy commissioner who declined to disclose the number of suspects detained in the two-day operation.
