June 9, 2019 (Ezega.com) -- Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed held discussions with opposition leaders to select nominees for board membership of the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE).
The NEBE is selecting a board of 5 to prepare for and oversee the upcoming 2020 elections, including the head of NEBE.
Based on recommendations from various parties, the NEBE has announced a shortlist of 8 candidates.
The eight shortlisted nominees are Megabi Zerihun Degu Mengiste, Melaku Sibhat Bedane, Wubshet Ayele Gete, Berhane Moges Fikr, Demoze Mame, Mrs. Bizuwork Ketete, Dr Getahun Kassa and Abera Degefu Negawo. Per NEBE guidelines, a nominee must be an Ethiopian national, independent, competent, ethical, and loyal, among others.
Of these candidates, four will be selected to serve in the new board of NEBE.
According to Office of the Prime Minister, the aim of the discussion was to solicit inputs on the candidates, before presenting them to the Ethiopian parliament.
A shortlist of four candidates is expected to be presented to the House of Peoples’ Representatives next week for the approval.
Following the meeting, the Prime Minister and political party leaders planted seedlings to highlight the effort to make Ethiopia green and clean.
