Ethiopian Security Aborts Planned IS, Al-Shabaab Terror Attacks

IS-al-ShabaabSeptember 22, 2019 ( -- Ethiopian Intelligence and National Security Service Agency said it has aborted planned terror attacks from members of al-Shabaab and Islamic State (IS) terrorist groups in several parts of the country. More than 20 members of terrorist groups are said to have been captured and detained in the operation.

The agency in a statement said on Sunday that members of the terrorist groups were arrested while preparing to launch the attacks in Addis Ababa and other parts of the country with the mission to kill people, mainly government officials, and destroy public property.

According to the agency, one of the terror groups led by Mohammed Abdulahi Dulet, nick-named Yahiya Ali Hassen, entered into Ethiopia via Djibouti, and has been identifying public and religious celebration places, and taking pictures of hotels where conferences are held.

The Agency’s statement said members of the Ethiopian security forces were hunting down members of the terror groups since they entered Ethiopia.

Ali was apprehended at Addis Ababa Bole International airport and his associates were also arrested attempting to carry out the attacks in different parts of Addis Ababa.

Two other members of the terrorist group, namely Abdek Mohammed Hussien and Redwan Mohammed Hussien, who allegedly led the planned attacks from their base in Djibouti were also apprehended in a joint operation with the security services networks of the Djibouti government.

Members of al-Shabaab terrorist group, who made their way from Southern Somalia and received training on suicide attacks in Hargessa city of Somaliland were also arrested at their training ground in joint operations with the Somaliland authorities, the statement said.

One of the suspects named Issac Ali Aden, who is believed to have come from Boh district of Somali regional state of Ethiopia, was red-handed with two IDs and 2.5 million birr, which the statement said has been used to carry out the planned attacks.

The other members of the al-Shabaab group including Ali Mohammed and Beshir Usman, who were partners of the terrorist mission, were also detained in Oromia state while leading the group which was heading to other parts of the country. In total, more than 20 members of the terrorist groups who were recruited by IS and Al-Shabaab were detained, the statement noted.

According to the agency, the suspects were apprehended along with their arms. Security networks and personnel from Djibouti, Puntland, and Somaliland, US, Italy, France, and Spain are also said to have participated in the anti-terror operations.

The terror groups were planning to carry out the attacks with bombs supported by machine guns, the statement added.
