President-Sahle-WorkSeptember 23, 2019 ( -- President Sahle-Work Zewde said delivering timely and adequate financial support to developing countries that are most vulnerable to climate change is important so that the transition to renewable energy can be realized quickly and successfully. President Sahle-Work Zewde made this remark at the closing of 74th United Nations General Assembly in New York.

She indicated that Ethiopia’s effort to transition to renewable energy sources through the adaptation of national electrification program is so far successful.

According to the President, the success has become an example for the World Bank to expand its work to other developing countries. Information obtained from the office of the President indicates that the World Bank is making it possible to apply to other developing countries because of the positive results achieved in Ethiopia.

The 74th United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York focused on climate, universal health coverage, sustainable development, financing for development, elimination of nuclear weapons, and small island developing states.

During her remark, the president mentioned that the world will need $52 billion yearly funding from international donors to realize the convention signed to provide electric power for the world by 2030.

‘So far, only $30.2 billion yearly funding has been achieved,’ President Sahle-Work Zewde said.

‘While the difference is forty percent, it shows the amount of problem the world has in tackling the problem,’ she added.

The President also reminded the UN delegates of the plan to fully transit the developing countries to safe and modern renewable energy by 2030.

According to her, Ethiopia has committed to a national low-cost electric utility program to increase the existing electricity supply to 100 per cent in rural and urban areas by 2025.

According to reports the Climate Action Summit, which will focus on climate change and environment, will be held on September 23, 2019.
