Oromia President Apologizes to Qeerroo for Erroneous Decision

By Staff Reporter

Shimelis-Abdisa-QeerrooOctober 23, 2019 (Ezega.com) -- Deputy President of the Oromia regional state Shimeles Abdisa has apologized to the Qeerroo, an ethnic Oromo youth, for erroneous decision by the federal police to disengage security guards from activist Jawar Mohammed.

The apology comes after thousands of people largely the Qeerroo took to the streets of several cities and towns of Oromia state to protest the government’s “alleged plan” of disengaging security guards from Jawar Mohammed.

Jawar Mohammed, who is also Director General of Oromo Media Network (OMN), on his Facebook page, claimed his security guards deployed by the government were ordered to leave and other security forces had advanced to his residence to arrest him.

At least five people were killed, and several others wounded amid clashes between the protesters and security forces and non-supporters of Jawar Mohammed.  A military vehicle was burnt down in Ambo city, about 100 km west of Addis Ababa during the protest.

In a briefing on Wednesday, October 23, 2019, Shimeles Abdisa said the measure taken by the federal police to disengage security guards from Jawar Mohammed’s residence was “wrong and unacceptable.”

The deputy president said the decision to disengage the security guards of “brother Jawar” was made without the knowledge of his government and the necessary measures would be taken against those involved.

The Ethiopian Federal Police Commissioner General Endeshaw Tassew on Wednesday morning said police did not take any measures, contradicting the information Jawar circulated in social media that security forces were advancing to arrest him.

According to deputy president, the government has been providing security protection to activist Jawar and it was wrong for the federal police to attempt to enforce its decision in the middle of the night.

He said the protesters have voiced their request in the appropriate manner, but other forces with hidden agendas joined the protest, caused damages and robbed public properties. Some other forces also tried to alter the very purpose of the protests into religious matters, Shimeles said.

He called on the people of Oromo to safeguard the political success secured through scarifices  of all Qeerroo members.

Earlier, it was reported that dozens of people were wounded in pro-Jawar Mohammed protests.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people took to the streets of Addis Ababa, calling the government to take legal measure against Jawar Mohammed. Police have tightened security in Addis Ababa after the violence in some parts of the Oromia region broke out while Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed out of the country, attending a forum in Russia.
