November 13, 2019 (Ezega.com) -- The Federal Attorney General announced today that it is preparing to file charges this week against suspects of the June 22, 2019 coup attempt in allegedly orchestrated in Amhara regional state and Addis Ababa.
Preparations have been made to file charges against 68 suspects (55 from Bahir Dar and 13 from Addis Ababa), Federal Attorney General Berhanu Tsegaye said in a joint briefing on Wednesday, November 13, 2019.
According to the attorney general, the four-month-long investigation of the police has confirmed that the late Ethiopian chief of Staff Seare Mekonnon and late President of the Amhara regional state Dr.Ambachew Mekonnon and other high-level government officials were killed in a coup attempt.
“The coup attempt and subsequent killings on June 22, 2019, in Bahir Dar and Addis Ababa, were committed by members of the special force of the Amhara region, army members and hired bodyguard under the leadership of the late Brigadier General Asaminew Tsigie, who was killed the following day along with his colleagues,” he said.
Berhanu said the investigation team included members from Addis Ababa, Amhara, and Tigray Police Commissions. The team confirmed the strong correlation between the twin attacks at Bahir Dar city, the capital of the Amhara regional state, and Addis Ababa.
According to the attorney general, the investigation team confirmed the late Ethiopian chief of staff Seare Mekonnon and retired general Gezai Abera were killed by Seare’s bodyguard Mesafint Tigabu.
The Attorney General said senior army officers, including Captain Memar Getnet, Captain Tadesse Eshete, and Major Adugna Worku, who are currently under arrest, were involved in the coup attempt.
The coup attempt and the killings were organized in three commands, consisting of members of the army, regional Special Forces, and soldiers who participated in coup attempt at the national palace in mid last year, Berhanu added
According to the Attorney General, also targeted in attacks were the police commission offices of Amhara regional state, office of the Amhara Democratic Party (ADP), and selected guest houses in the region.
About 200 suspects were arrested in Bahir Dar city out of which 45 of them, who were believed to have little involvement in the crimes, were changed into eyewitnesses.
Following the incidents, arrest warrants were issued for 70 suspects, 31 of them were taken into custody. Bank accounts of 22 suspects were also frozen, he said.
Moreover, several weapons, mobile phones, foreign and local banknotes, and five vehicles were seized in connection with the alleged crimes, he said.
Berhanu said 15 individuals were killed and 20 others injured in the coup attempt. Several armaments including 114 Kalashnikov were captured.
It is to be recalled that, in addition to the regional Amhara President and the Ethiopian Army Chief of Staff, also killed in the June 22 coup attempt were Eizez Wasie advisor to the regional president, the regional state’s Attorney General, Migbaru Kebede, and the retired Major General Geza’e Abera.
