November 28, 2019 (Ezega.com) -- In what seemed to be a response to the Tigriyan Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF), Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said “all the necessary legal conditions and procedures were met to establish the Prosperity Party,” which will be replacing the ruling coalition, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).
In a recent statement, Debretsion Gebremichael, the Chairman of TPLF, criticized the drive to convert the EPRDF into a unified party as “illegal.” He said as legal entities, member parties of the EPRDF cannot be dissolved by any party.
The TPLF accused the leadership of dissolving the EPRDF without due process, weakening the federal system, and taking away the rights of people to self-administration in the name of creating a unified party.
In a Facebook page post, the Prime Minister said the establishment of the new party has been studied by scholars and was tabled for discussions to leadership at all levels.
In urgent sessions held on Wednesday, the Oromo Democratic Party (ODP) and the Amhara Democratic Party (ADP) unanimously approved the merger of the ruling coalition EPRDF, he said.
The premier also said he is sure that the general assembly of the Southern Ethiopian Peoples’ Democratic Movement (SEPDM) will approve the merger.
“I am very pleased to inform you that the Prosperity Party was established after all legal conditions and procedures were met,” the Premier said.
He said the prosperity party will lead the nation to prosperity and has prepared a ten-year program to be developed through public discussions.
Contrary to information being disseminated by some forces, the Prosperity Party will not to reintroduce a unitary government but promote multinationalism and strengthen federal and democratic Ethiopia.
The premier called on those political parties who are against the new party to come up with better alternatives to the people of Ethiopia.
The premier also sent congratulatory messages to Qerroo, the Oromo youth group, and Fano, the Amhara youth group, and Zerema youth group in the southern Ethiopia which he said played vital roles for the ongoing political reform to materialize.
The Prosperity Party which you fought for has been established and I call upon you to play your part in building the party.
PM Abiy Ahmed said in a recent meeting of the Prosperity Party discussed the need to maintain the supremacy of law in the country and decided to take legal measures on those groups who are working to destabilize the nation.
