TPLF Will Not Recognize Ruling Party after Next September: TPLF Official

By Staff Reporter

TPLF-Tigray-electionsJune 27, 2020 ( -- The Tigray region governing party will not recognize the ruling Prosperity Party as a federal government of Ethiopia as of next September, TPLF high-level official has said.

Getachew Reda, Executive Member of Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF), told VOA Amharic Service that the relationship with the administration in Addis Ababa will be determined by the winning party of the planned election to be held in Tigray region late August.

According to Executive Member, Tigray region does not have any intention to be a self-governing nation but the possibility for the region to be autonomous will be decided by the people and the winning party.

“TPLF will not send representatives to Addis Ababa as members of the federal parliament if it wins the regional election considering the term of the federal government will expire on September 1st, 2020,” he said.

Speaking about the recent refusal of the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia to organize elections in Tigray state, Getachew said NEBE is not entitled to grant people the right to elect and be elected.

The people of Tigray can exercise their natural political rights safe and sound. Their right to self-administration can not be denied when the electoral board refuses to organize the election, Getachew claimed.

“When NEBE is not willing to organize the election, given regional states or people can conduct election based on the political right bestowed to them by the constitution,” he said.

According to the TPLF executive member, the electoral board should organize the election as long as the people of a given region want to do so. “The right to elect and be elected, self-administration and secession is above the authority of the electoral board.”

The House of Peoples Representatives and House of Federation decided that 6th general elections will be held between 9-12 months after the COVID-19 pandemic is deemed not a public health threat.

Getachew said the resolutions passed by both houses were politically motivated and the Tigray region will conduct the election late August as per the constitution by establishing an electoral commission that will organize the election.

TPLF executive member is confident that the regional state will conduct free, fair, and acceptable election with all the necessary preparations are in place over the coming less than two and a half months.

“It will not be difficult to establish an electoral commission which will be made up of people who are neutral. It is also possible to make it happen as long as there is a strong commitment among all parties concerned,” he said

There is consensus among the governing party, competing parties, and the general public on the importance of holding the election with all the necessary cautions are taken against the threat of COVID-19 pandemic, he added.

TPLF and other three regional political parties are expected to participate in the planned regional council election in late August.
