TPLF-officials-released-bailJuly 31, 2020 (Ezega.com) -- The Federal First Instance Court released high-level officials of the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) who were arrested in connection with the death of popular singer Hachalu Hundessa.

Among those arrested a few weeks ago were TPLF Addis Ababa Bureau Head Tewolde Gebresadom, Tesfalem Yehdego, Director of the Law and Justice institution in the rank of State Minister; Atsbeha Alemayehu, Security Head of the Akaki Kality Subcity and his two drivers. They were arrested on suspicion of transferring valuable information to internal and external terrorist groups.

Gebremedhin Tadele, the lawyer of the suspects, told local media that his clients were released after the Police failed to substantiate their allegations with the required evidence.

The police said they were waiting for technical evidence from the Information Network and Security Agency (INSA) and demanded an additional 14 days.

During their bail application, the suspects denied committing the offense and requested the court to release them on bail.

Gebremedhin said police could not present evidence linking the suspects to the case. The court, however, ruled in favor of the suspects and rejected the 14 days to collect the evidence against them.

Finally, the court released them on bail after the police failed to produce the necessary information, he said.

TPLF officials will be the first defendants released among those suspects detained in connection with the killing of the late popular singer.

Meanwhile, the police apprehended 20 members of armed men who allegedly killed 14 civilians in Guba district of Benishangul Gumuz regional state.

Peace and Security Bureau Head of the regional state Abdulaziz Mohammed said the killers were detained along with 12 guns.

At least 14 people were killed and six others wounded this week in an ambush in Benishangul Gumuz regional state of western Ethiopia.

The dead are among ethnic Amhara people who used to live in Sekela locality of the Amhara region, the region’s Communication Affairs Director Gizachew Muluneh told local media.

The director blamed the “bandits” of the area for assassinating the civilians in Metekel zone, Guba district, Abujar locality. Commenting about the case earlier, the official had said “The armed men had disappeared into the nearby dense forest.”

About 200 people are displaced from the area where the attack occurred, Abdulaziz added.

The national defense forces reportedly killed 12 and detained 30 other members of the bandits in a counter-attack it carried out recently.
