September 16, 2020 (Ezega.com) -- Hundreds of thousands of people rallied on the streets of Mekele city, capital of Tigray region of northern Ethiopia in solidarity with the recent elections and the governing party of the region.
Similar demonstrations were held in Wuqiro, Alamata, Shire, Humera and other towns of the region in a show of support for the ruling the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) which won the region’s recent elections against infant political parties.
TPLF won last week’s election in landslide victory securing 98.2 percent of total votes and 189 seats out of 190 seats of the regional parliament. The federal government referred to the election as “illegal.”
Addressing the demonstrators on the premises of Mekele martyrs center, TPLF chairperson Debretsion Gebremichael said the outcome of the election shows the trust TPLF has established with the people of Tigray.
The demonstrators, largely composed of TPLF supporters, demanded the federal government release political prisoners and denounced the decision passed by the house of federation which rejected the election as “null and void.”
Debretsion accused the federal government and some media houses of campaigning against the people of Tigray and TPLF and pointed out theneed for a political discourse to resolve ongoing and escalating political tensions in Ethiopia.
The demonstrations were held amid growing concern over spread of coronavirus pandemic in the region. So far, 5267 people in the Tigray region were confirmed positive for COVID-19 infection.
Meanwhile, ethnic Amhara and Agew have been reportedly attacked this week in Bulen and Wonbera districts of the Benishangul Gumuz region of Ethiopia.
The region’s peace building and security office head Abera Bayatta told local media that the attack in those places have claimed the lives of innocent citizens but did not mention the exact number casualties.
The attack was launched by armed groups who were repordely armed with heavy weapons including AK 47.
Residents told DW Amharic service that the perpetrators carried out the attack in broad daylight and speculated that they could have links to government officials in the region.
“The attackers changed their location as soon as security forces were deployed to the areas where they carried out the attack,” the residents were quoted as saying.
Amhara security forces reportedly are fighting against the attacking forces in two districts as well as in Metekel where the perpetrators launched fresh attacks against innocent people.
Sources also said that members of the Defense Forces were deployed to the region. An unspecified number of attackers are reportedly killed by joint operation of security forces and the defense force.
Thousands of residents in the districts were reportedly displaced in connection with the latest of attacks.
