Oromia Police Arrests 503 Men on Suspicion of Planning Terrorist Attacks

Irreecha-celebrationOctober 1, 2020 (Ezega.com) -- The Oromia Regional Police said they have arrested 503 men on suspicion of planning terrorist attacks during the annual Irreecha celebration which is scheduled to be held in Addis Ababa next Saturday.

Oromia Police Commissioner General Ararsa Merdassa in a briefing said the Oromia police also seized a large quantity of weapons in raids while being smuggled to the capital.

Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa Adanech Abebie and Abba Gaddas-Oromo traditional leaders had said the Irreecha celebration otherwise called the ‘Oromo People ThanksGiving Day” will be celebrated with not more than five million people in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The commissioner general said Police apprehended 503 suspects and seized 14 rifles, 26 bombs and 103 pistols along with trained grenade launchers.

According to the Commissioner General, the suspects allegedly plan to turn Addis Ababa into a war zone to meet their individual interests and he accused the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) and the rebel Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) of being behind the planned attacks.

Meanwhile, the Ethiopian Air Force announced complete readiness to defend possible threats targeting the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

In an interview with local media, Commander of the Ethiopian Air Force Major General Yilma Merdassa said the air force has attained better competency and is well equipped with the necessary manpower and technology.

The Ethiopian Air Force has beefed up its combat strategy, tactics and concepts of operation to defend any possible attacks on the GERD.

The air force keeps an eye on the GERD and any unauthorized aircraft will not be allowed to fly over the sky of the massive hydro power project.

Currently the air force owns fighting jets that can fly more than four hours and operates digitally.

Yilma said Ethiopia is striving to become a top air force in Africa in the coming ten years by modernizing its force and developing aviation.

“The Ethiopian Air Force is even now among the best in Africa and well poised to protect the sovereignty of the country,” he noted.

According to the Major General, the air force offers training for 15 African countries.
