Ethiopian-President-Sahle-WorkOctober 5, 2020 ( -- Ethiopian President Sahelework Zewdie on Monday vowed to intensify the government’s response to the problem of insurgency which plagued several parts of the country during the last Ethiopian year.

Ethiopia’s Oromia and Benishangul Gumuz region, in particular, were plagued by recurrent violence resulting in the killings of hundreds innocent people, displacement of tens of thousands of others, and destruction of property.

Opening the joint session of the House of Federation and House of People’s Representatives, Sahlework said the government would take strict measures to prevent any armed group or individual from engaging in illegal activities in all parts of the nation.

Stringent security measures will be launched against any armed group to ensure the rule of law and the safety of citizens are not compromised under any circumstances.

"Other than the government, no one can get armed and illegitimate security establishments will not exist any more," she said

It is not clear if the president was referring to regional special forces which many people doubt over the legitimacy of their formation.

President Sahlework Zewdie said the government would jointly work with concerned bodies to build democracy on a firm foundation to maintain the supremacy of law.

Sahlework said activities on democratization and prevalence of lasting peace will be carried out by involving the entire population and political parties in the country.

According to the president, the government believes that the destiny of the country and its people rests on effectively and carefully constructed democratic order.

However, as democracy is not attained through longing alone commitment and perseverance are expected from the Ethiopian public, she added.

The president, who condemned the heinous acts and lawlessness that took several lives and destroyed public property during the last Ethiopian year, pointed out that the crime was “a clear demonstration that how we misunderstood democracy.”

President Sahlework further said that the government is determined to make the upcoming election fair, democratic, and credible in extreme contrast to the elections held in the past times.

She said the government will introduce key economic measures to curb inflation against the backdrop COVID-19 epidemic which continues to negatively affect the nation’s journey to prosperity.

Suppressing inflation to a single digit through monetary and fiscal policies is essential and the government will do all it can to make that happen, she noted.

Most of the delayed projects have caused public grievances, she said, adding that “this will be the year where the projects will be accomplished and operational.” she added.

According to the government’s plan two turbines of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) will begin production this year while the second phase water filling will proceed.
