Budget Cut to Tigray Region Tantamount to Declaring War: TPLF Official

TPLF-official-denounces-budget-cutOctober 8, 2020 (Ezega.com) -- The Ethiopian House of Federation’s decision to cut budget subsidy to the Tigray region is tantamount to declaring war against the region and its people, an official has said.

Deputy President of the Tigray region Dr. Abrham Tekeste told the BBC Amharic service that the decision would push the Tigray regional state into secession.

The upper house decision comes after the Tigray region held election on September 9, 2020, defying the decision of the House of Federation which postponed general elections due to COVID-19 pandemic.

In retribution, the House ordered the Federal Government to suspend budget subsidy to the region and suspend any form of relationship with Tigray regional council and higher executive bodies.

According to the house’s decision, the Federal Government, however, will have working relationships with the region’s legal institutions, including city/town and locality (kebele) administrations to provide “basic services” to the people of the region.

“The latest decision is an extension of illegal measures taken by the House against the Tigray region and it is pushing the region to secede from the federal government,” Abrham said

He said the budget issue is one of the bondages that hold the federal government and member states together. “The federal budget is nothing but the annual contribution of total funds collected through taxes and other means by regional states to be redistributed among them based on budget formula,” he added.

“We will not sit and see if the federal government refuses to provide the budget to the Tigray region which is a member state of the Ethiopian federation,” he warned.

The deputy president described the decision as “dangerous and irresponsible” and can potentially shove the nation into nonstop chaos.

"Tigray is a member of the federal government and the house’s decision will ruin the federal system," he added.

According to the deputy president, if the house of federation sticks to its decision, the Tigray region would suspend the fund it is supposed to contribute to the federal government.

He said the federal government collected seven billion birr from the Tigray region during the last budget year and is set to collect nine billion birr from the region this Ethiopian budget year.

The relation between the ruling party of Ethiopia and Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) – governing party of Tigray regional State is worsening thereby escalating the political tension in the country.
