Debretsion-GebremichaelNovember 9, 2020 (Ezega.com) -- The President of Tigray region Debretsion Gebremichael has called for a ceasefire between forces of the region and the federal government as the later vows to advance to Mekele city, the seat of the regional government, Ezega.com learned.

In a letter he wrote to the African Union, Debretsion has called on the continental body to intervene and stop the and rescue the nation from sliding into civil war.

The United Nations on Monday announced that the Ethiopian defense force and the forces of Tigray region are fighting at least in eight battlefields.

Debretsion demanded the South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is also current chairperson of the African Union, to facilitate inclusive peace talks.

“I have a firm belief that the political differences cannot be solved by military means” Debretsion said.

Last Friday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the launching of a campaign against forces loyal to Tigrayan leaders whom he accused of attacking a military base in the town of Dansha.

In a message he conveyed for the international community, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the military operation against the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) aims to end impunity of leaders of the ‘rebel group’ in Mekele and maintain constitutional order in the country.

Abiy said consistent transgressions by the TPLF clique have led the Federal Government to undertake law enforcement operations.

Abiy stated the aim of the operation is, once and for all, to put an end to impunity and forces that moved to destabilize the country as well as the region.

In a statement, Abiy's office accused TPLF leaders of hiding in the regional capital Mekele and "using the civilian population as human shields".

In a message he tweeted on Monday, Abiy rubbished concerns that Ethiopia will descend into chaos.

“Concerns that Ethiopia will descend into chaos are unfounded & a result of not understanding the context deeply,” he added.

“Ethiopia is grateful for friends expressing their concern,” he said, adding “Our rule of law operation is aimed at guaranteeing peace and stability once and for all by bringing perpetrators of instability to justice.”

“Our rule of law enforcement operation, as a sovereign state with the capacity to manage its own internal affairs, will wrap up soon by ending the prevailing impunity,” Abiy noted.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence has rejected TPLF’s claim that the ‘rebel force’ had shot down a fighter jet belonging to Ethiopian Air Force.

“The information is totally false,” said Major General Mohammed Tessema, Defence Indoctrination Director General at the Ministry.

According to Maj Gen Mohammed, the Ethiopian Defense Forces have freed several areas from the "rebel TPLF forces."
